Telegram Account Frozen, Banned or Spam Limited: What It Means and How to Recover

A frozen Telegram account in read-only mode with an appeal deadline

You opened Telegram and one of your accounts has a banner across the chat list saying the account is frozen. You can still scroll your chats. You cannot send a single message. Somewhere in that notice is a date, and the date is the part that matters, because Telegram's own API documentation says a frozen account is deleted on that date unless an appeal is submitted and accepted.

If the account is one of 20 or 40 your team runs, there is a second clock running too. Every conversation that account owns goes with it when it is deleted. This guide covers both: how to work out which restriction you actually have, how to appeal it properly, and what to save while the account can still read.

Frozen, spam limited and banned are three different problems

People use "banned" for all three, and that is how they end up appealing in the wrong place. Each state has a different symptom, a different deadline and a different route out.

What you see What it is Can you read? Can you send? How it ends Where to appeal
A banner saying the account is frozen, with a date Frozen Yes No, the account is read-only Deleted on the date shown, unless an appeal is accepted The appeal link in the notice, or @SpamBot
@SpamBot says your account is limited Spam limited Yes Only to people who saved your number, or who message you first Lifts on its own. A first limit usually lasts a few days, repeats last longer @SpamBot, if you believe it was a mistake
The login screen says the phone number is banned Banned number No No Does not end on its own The help option on the login screen, which goes to Telegram support
Logged out of every device, or a new session you do not recognise Not a Telegram penalty Depends Depends Depends on who has the session Treat it as a security incident, not an appeal

The last row matters more than it looks. If an account was signed out or someone else is using it, appealing to @SpamBot does nothing. Follow the steps in our guide to protecting a Telegram account instead: terminate unknown sessions, set two-step verification and check the recovery email.

What a spam limit actually allows

The spam limit is the oldest and mildest of the three. Telegram's spam FAQ says a limited account can still message people who have its number saved as a contact, and can always reply to anyone who messages it first. What it loses is the ability to start conversations with strangers.

The same FAQ is blunt about two things. Asking for an early release does not work. And continued messaging of strangers after repeated limits can remove that ability permanently. The FAQ also says some newly registered numbers get limited by mistake, sometimes because of a previous owner of the number or because it is a virtual number. That is the case @SpamBot is for.

What a freeze actually blocks

A freeze is a heavier state. The account becomes read-only. Telegram's developer documentation describes an error, FROZEN_METHOD_INVALID, returned when a frozen account calls something it is no longer allowed to call, and a second error for chats a frozen account can no longer reach. In practice that means no sending, no joining groups or channels, no profile changes and, from what users report, no signing in on a device that was not already connected.

Telegram's config also carries three values for a frozen account: the date it was frozen, the date it will be deleted, and a link for submitting an appeal. That is why the in-app notice shows a deadline. The deadline is real, and it is the only one that counts. Ignore any blog post, this one included, that gives you a fixed number of days.

How to appeal a frozen Telegram account

Appeal once, appeal early, and appeal in plain language. The order of operations matters more than the wording.

1. Write the deletion date down where your team can see it

Before anything else, put the date from the notice in a shared place: the CRM record for that account, the team channel, wherever the people who depend on it will see it. A freeze that one person noticed on their phone and forgot about is how accounts get deleted with a pending appeal nobody filed.

2. Stop everything that sends through that account

The account cannot send, but your tooling may keep trying. Pause any broadcast, sequence, automation or AI workflow that routes through it. More importantly, look at what the frozen account was doing in the days before the freeze and stop the same thing on every other account. If five accounts ran the same campaign to the same kind of audience, the frozen one is probably just the first.

3. Open the appeal from the frozen account itself

Use the appeal link in the freeze notice first. If that does not load, open @SpamBot from the frozen account, send /start, and follow its prompts. The bot asks questions and expects answers in your own words. If it shows a captcha and you take too long, start again with /start.

4. Write one short, checkable explanation

What to include:

  • Who you are and what the account is for, in one or two sentences. "This is the business development account for a payments company. We use it to talk to partners who contacted us first or who we met at events."
  • What you were doing that might have looked like spam, stated honestly. "On Monday we messaged 60 people from a conference attendee list."
  • What you have changed. "We have stopped messaging people who have not contacted us first."

What to leave out: threats, legal language, claims about how much you pay for Telegram Premium, and anything you cannot back up. A moderator reads a lot of these. A specific, modest explanation stands out more than an indignant one.

5. Send it once, then wait

We have seen no evidence that repeated appeals speed anything up, and several reports of people who were not notified when their account was restored. The banner simply disappeared. Check the account once a day rather than filing again.

6. Refuse anyone selling an unfreeze

No outside service can unfreeze a Telegram account. Anyone who asks for your login code, your two-step verification password or a payment to "escalate" your case is either guessing or trying to take the account. Telegram's appeal route is free and it is the only one.

The deletion date is also a data deadline

This is the part most recovery guides skip, and for a business account it is the part that costs money.

While an account is frozen it is still readable. Once it is deleted, it is not. Every conversation, every file a client sent, every price you quoted in a chat disappears with it. If the appeal fails, the read-only period was your only chance to keep any of it.

Treat the first day of a freeze as a backup day, not a waiting day. Two things to do immediately:

  • Try Telegram's own export. If Telegram Desktop is already signed in on that account, go to Settings, then Advanced, then Export Telegram data. Telegram does not document whether every part of the export works on a frozen account, so try it on day one rather than finding out on the last day.
  • List what the account owns. Write down every open conversation, who it was with, what stage the deal or ticket was at and what was last promised. If the account is deleted, this list is how someone else picks up those relationships.

Then check what already exists outside Telegram. A copy that was made before the freeze is worth more than any export you attempt after it.

Why one frozen account is an operations problem, not a phone problem

A single person with a single frozen account has an annoying week. A team running dozens of accounts has a different problem: it has to know, quickly, which relationships that account held and how to keep them alive without getting a second account frozen in the process.

That is the argument we make about multi-account work generally. Running 40 accounts is not running one account 40 times. It is proxies, pacing, per-account reputation and knowing which account owns which relationship. A freeze is the moment you find out whether you had any of that.

Know which conversations the account owned

If your accounts live in separate apps on separate phones, answering "what was this account in the middle of?" means picking up that phone and scrolling. In a multi-account inbox such as Entergram's, where the inboxes of 100+ personal accounts sit in one interface, you filter down to the frozen account and see its open conversations, with their pipeline stage and custom fields, in one view.

There is a limit to state plainly here. Entergram fetches conversations from Telegram in real time and keeps no message history in its database, so if Telegram deletes the account, Entergram cannot show you its history either. The CRM view helps you act during the read-only window. It is not a backup of the messages.

Keep a record outside Telegram before you need one

The copies that survive a deleted account are the ones that were already somewhere else:

  • Slack. Entergram's two-way Slack integration sends each connected account's conversations into the Slack channel you map it to. Slack keeps what it received, so a message later removed on the Telegram side, or an account later deleted, does not erase that record.
  • Notion. The Notion integration writes new Telegram chats to your Notion database automatically, so you have a running list of who each account was talking to.

Neither of these can be switched on after a freeze and pick up the past. That is the whole point: they work because they were already running. We cover the same reasoning for deleted messages in our guide to building a Telegram audit trail.

Do not move the frozen account's contacts to a sibling account in bulk

The instinct is to message everyone the frozen account was talking to from another account: "Hi, we had to switch accounts." For a handful of warm relationships, one at a time, that is reasonable. For the whole contact list it is exactly the pattern that gets accounts limited and frozen: one account messaging a large number of people who never wrote to it.

Do it slowly, prioritise the open deals and support cases, and where you have another channel such as email, use it to say which account to expect a message from. Then the person can message you first, which Telegram's rules always allow.

Check the rest of the fleet the same day

Freezes cluster because the behaviour that caused one is usually shared across several accounts. On the day one account freezes, message @SpamBot from each of the others and note which ones report a limit. Slow those down first.

Network setup is part of this, though less than people hope. In Entergram each connected account runs through its own unique proxy, so 40 accounts do not appear to Telegram as 40 accounts on one connection. That removes one obvious signal. It does not make a spammy campaign safe, it does not raise Telegram's limits, and no tool can promise you will never see a freeze. Behaviour and recipient consent decide that.

How to lower the odds of the next freeze

Prevention has its own guide, how to manage 10+ Telegram accounts without getting banned, and it is worth reading in full if you run more than a few accounts. The short version, drawn from Telegram's own spam FAQ and from what we see in practice:

  • Start conversations only with people who expect them. Telegram's FAQ says unsolicited messages can be reported regardless of content, even a plain "hello", and that username search is not meant for contacting strangers.
  • Ramp new accounts slowly. A brand new number that immediately messages dozens of people looks like what it is.
  • Pace broadcasts and spread them across accounts rather than pushing one account to its limit.
  • Vary your messages. The same text sent from many accounts to many strangers is the easiest pattern there is to detect.
  • Check @SpamBot on a schedule, not only after something goes wrong. A spam limit is often the warning before a freeze.
  • Back up the relationships, not just the account. Assume any single account can disappear and make sure its conversations exist somewhere else.

Frequently asked questions

My Telegram account says it is frozen. Will it unfreeze on its own?

No. Telegram's documentation says a frozen account is deleted on the date shown in the notice unless an appeal is submitted and accepted. A spam limit expires on its own; a freeze does not.

How long do I have to appeal a frozen Telegram account?

Until the date shown in the freeze notice in the app. Telegram does not publish a fixed number of days, so the in-app date is the only reliable deadline. Appeal as early as you can.

Can I still read my chats and download my data while my account is frozen?

You can still read your chats, because a frozen account is read-only rather than locked. If Telegram Desktop is already signed in, try Settings, then Advanced, then Export Telegram data straight away. Telegram does not document whether every part of the export works while frozen, so do not leave it until the deadline.

What is the difference between a spam limit and a frozen account on Telegram?

A spam-limited account can still message people who saved its number and reply to anyone who writes first, and the limit expires by itself. A frozen account cannot send anything at all, and it is deleted on a set date unless an appeal succeeds.

Should I create a new Telegram account while my appeal is pending?

Not to carry on the same activity. A new account that immediately repeats what got the old one frozen tends to end the same way. If you need to keep relationships alive, contact the most important people one at a time, or through another channel, and let them message you first.

Does using a Telegram CRM or third-party client cause freezes?

Any tool that signs into your account is part of the picture, and some users have reported freezes shortly after connecting a new service. What usually triggers a freeze is behaviour, especially messaging people who did not expect it. Ask any tool you use how it handles proxies and sending pace, and never treat a tool as permission to message strangers at volume.

What to do in the next hour

If an account is frozen right now: write the deletion date somewhere your team will see it, pause every send that routes through that account and its siblings, file one honest appeal from the frozen account, then spend the rest of the day saving what it holds. If none of your accounts is frozen yet, the most useful thing you can do today is make sure each one's conversations already exist somewhere outside Telegram.
