How to Find Someone on Telegram: Username, Link, Phone Number and Mutual Groups

There is no name search for Telegram users, only five ways in
Someone told you on a call last week to "just find me on Telegram", or you came back from an event with a stack of badges that had Telegram handles scribbled on them. You typed a name into the search bar and got eleven accounts with the same first name and a stock photo. That is normal. Telegram's own FAQ says the app has over 1 billion active users, and display names are not unique, so a name on its own finds almost nobody.
What actually works is narrower and more reliable. There are five real ways to find a specific person on Telegram, and each one depends on something the other person controls: whether they set a public username, whether they shared a link, whether their privacy settings let people find them by phone number, or whether you are in the same group. This guide covers all five, the one that no longer exists, and the part most guides skip: checking that the account you found is the person you meant, not an impersonator with one letter changed.
If you are looking for communities rather than people, that is a different job. We cover it in how to find Telegram groups and how to find Telegram channels.
| Method | What you need | When it works | What blocks it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global search by username | Their exact username | They set a public username | No username, or you misspell it |
| A t.me link | A link they shared | Always, if the username is current | They changed or removed the username |
| Phone number | Their number | Their privacy setting allows finding by number | Setting restricted to their contacts |
| Mutual group | A group you both belong to | The member list is visible to you | Admins hid the member list |
| Asking them to message first | Any other channel to reach them | Always | Nothing, which is why it is underrated |
Global search finds usernames, not people
A Telegram username is the public handle that starts with @. It is optional. Plenty of accounts never set one, and those accounts cannot be found by strangers through search at all.
To search by username:
- Open the search field at the top of your chat list (on mobile, pull down or tap the magnifier).
- Type the username, with or without the @.
- Results from your own chats and contacts appear first. Accounts you have never talked to appear in a separate global section below them.
- Open the profile before you message. Check the username character by character against what you were given.
A few rules make this faster. Telegram's API documentation says a username accepts only a-z, 0-9 and underscores, and must be 5 to 32 characters long. The FAQ adds that usernames are case-insensitive, so @AnnaSales and @annasales are the same account. If someone gave you a handle with a hyphen, a dot or a space in it, it is not a Telegram username. It is probably from another platform.
Global search matches names and usernames. It does not search message content, bios or anything someone posted in a group. You cannot type "head of partnerships at a payments company" and get a person back. Telegram's own method for this, documented as contacts.search, is described as returning users "found by username substring". That is the whole mechanism.
A t.me link is the most reliable way to reach the right account
If you can get a link instead of a typed handle, take the link. It removes every spelling mistake.
Telegram supports several link formats that open a profile directly:
t.me/username, the standard public username link.username.t.me, an alternative form the FAQ mentions for the same thing.t.me/+15551234567, a phone number link, which opens the account behind that number.
The phone number link has a condition. The FAQ says it only works if the person's privacy settings let others find them by phone number. If it does not open a profile, the setting is restricted. Nothing is broken on your side.
In practice, the cleanest way to find a business contact is to ask for their link in whatever channel you already share: an email signature, a LinkedIn message, the company website. A link that comes from an official source is also your first defence against impersonators, which we come back to below.
Phone number search depends on a privacy setting you do not control
To find someone by phone number, add the number as a contact, either in your phone's address book or directly in Telegram. If the person has a Telegram account on that number and their privacy settings allow it, the account appears in your contacts. If the setting does not allow it, nothing appears, and Telegram gives you no hint about whether the account exists.
Two separate controls sit behind this, both under Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Phone Number:
- Who can see my phone number. The FAQ says that by default your number is only visible to people you have saved as contacts, and that people who already have your number saved will always see it.
- Who can find me by my number. Telegram's API describes this control as whether people can add you to their contact list by your phone number. When it is restricted, a stranger who has your number cannot use it to locate your account.
Two consequences follow for business use. First, phone lookup fails silently for exactly the people who care most about privacy, which often includes senior people. Second, the reverse is true too: when you message someone by username, the FAQ says neither side sees the other's phone number unless privacy settings allow it. You can run a whole relationship on Telegram without ever exchanging numbers. If you would rather not tie the account to a personal number at all, see Telegram without a phone number.
Telegram has no lookup by email address. The FAQ lists the ways someone can reach you: they know your number, you messaged them first, you share a group, or you set a public username. Email is not on that list.
Mutual groups work, unless the admins hid the member list
If you and the person you are looking for are both in the same group, you can open the member list, find them, and tap through to their profile. Once you have found someone, their profile also shows the groups you have in common, which Telegram exposes as chats in common. That list is useful context before a first message: two shared industry groups is a reasonable opener, zero shared groups means you are a stranger.
The limit is that large groups can hide their members. Telegram lets admins of a supergroup hide the participant list once the group reaches a minimum size, and the default value for that minimum in Telegram's client configuration is 100 members. In a hidden group you will only find someone if they post, and you can tap their name on the message.
This is also the method that gets abused most, so the etiquette matters. Messaging someone because you saw them in a group is cold outreach, not a warm introduction. Treat it that way.
People Nearby is gone, whatever the old videos say
Half the tutorials ranking for this query still tell you to open Contacts and use People Nearby to find users around you. That feature no longer exists. Pavel Durov announced on 6 September 2024 that Telegram had removed People Nearby, saying it was used by less than 0.1% of Telegram users and had problems with bots and scammers. In the same post he said it would be replaced by a "Businesses Nearby" listing for verified businesses, which is a way to find shops, not people.
If a guide still lists People Nearby, it was written before September 2024 or copied from one that was. Skip it.
Finding the account is half the job, confirming it is the person is the other half
For a business contact, the expensive mistake is not failing to find someone. It is finding the wrong account and sending a contract, a wallet address or an invoice to an impersonator. Impersonation on Telegram is cheap: anyone can register a username one character away from a real one and copy the profile photo.
Check these before you trust an account:
| Signal | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Exact username | Every character, especially l versus I, 0 versus o, doubled letters and trailing underscores |
Lookalike handles are the most common impersonation |
| Source of the handle | Did it come from an official website, email signature or a link you were sent? | A handle you found by searching a name proves nothing |
| SCAM or FAKE label | A red label next to the name | Telegram marks accounts reported by many users as fake or scam |
| Verification | Blue check or a third-party icon | See the note below on what these do and do not mean |
| Groups in common | Shared industry groups | A real peer usually overlaps with you somewhere |
| Who messages first | Ask them to write to you from a channel you already trust | Removes the guesswork entirely |
On verification, two details catch people out. Telegram's own verification page says it does not verify user accounts at the moment. Its blue badge goes to large official channels, groups and bots. So a personal account claiming to be "the official support account" of a company is not made more credible by anything on its profile. Separately, since a January 2025 update, approved third-party services can attach their own verification icon to user accounts, shown as a small logo before the name. Open the profile to see who issued it.
One more trap: usernames are not permanent identities. An owner can change or remove a username at any time, and collectible usernames can be bought, sold and transferred on Fragment. The handle that belonged to a founder last year may belong to someone else today. If the relationship already exists in your chat history, trust the chat you have, not a fresh search for the handle.
What you cannot do on Telegram, and what tools claiming otherwise are doing
The search results for this query include sites that promise to find a phone number, real name or email behind any Telegram username. Be clear about what Telegram allows:
- You cannot see the phone number of an account unless its privacy settings show it to you.
- You cannot search users by email, by job title or by what they wrote.
- You cannot list every group a user belongs to. You can only see the groups you share with them.
- You cannot get into a private group without an invite.
Tools that claim more are usually matching the username against data leaked or scraped elsewhere. Whatever you think of that legally, it is not a basis for a business relationship, and a first message that reveals you know someone's private number is a good way to get reported.
Telegram is direct about the intent behind search. Its spam FAQ says username search is not a tool for making new friends, and asks you to contact people only if you are sure they expect a message. Unwanted messages get reported, even a plain "hello", and enough reports put a spam limit on the account that sent them. If that has already happened to one of your accounts, our guide to a frozen or spam limited Telegram account covers what each restriction means.
Finding 300 people is an operations problem, not a search
Everything above assumes you are looking for one person. That changes when the input is a spreadsheet: 300 usernames from an event app, a CRM export with phone numbers in one column, a partner list where half the rows have a handle and half have a number.
At that size the hard part is not the search. It is which account does the looking, how fast, and who owns the conversation afterwards. If five people on your team each paste 60 handles into their own Telegram app, you get duplicate messages to the same lead, no record of who replied to whom, and five accounts making the same burst of lookups. Running many personal accounts is proxies, pacing and ownership, not a bigger search box.
This is the job Entergram's Telegram broadcast tool is built for, using real personal Telegram accounts rather than bots:
- You import the list. Imported columns become custom CRM fields you can filter on and use as merge tags.
- Each username is resolved through live Telegram search on a connected account, including people who have never messaged your workspace.
- When a row has no username, the phone number is resolved through the connected account instead.
- The send can be spread across several connected accounts, each on its own unique proxy, with Telegram-aware pacing.
- Replies land in the shared inbox against the CRM record, so you can see who answered and who owns the thread.
Through Telegram MCP, the same live search is available to an AI assistant, and each result shows whether any account in your workspace already knows or belongs to it. That is the check that stops two reps cold-messaging a person a colleague already talks to.
The limits are worth stating plainly. Live search matches a name or username, not message content. It is rate limited to protect the connected accounts. It does not get you into private groups the account was never admitted to. Phone resolution cannot get past a person's privacy setting any more than your phone can. And Entergram does not harvest members from groups or sell contact data: you supply the list, Entergram resolves it.
The boundary of this argument matters too. If you need to find five people this week, you do not need a tool. The Telegram app, an exact username and a link from an official source are enough.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find someone on Telegram if I only know their name?
Usually you cannot, reliably. Global search matches names and usernames of public accounts, and display names are not unique. Ask the person for their username or a t.me link through a channel you already share, or look for them in a group you both belong to.
Can I find someone on Telegram by phone number without saving them as a contact?
In the app, the usual route is adding the number as a contact, or opening a t.me/+number link. Both only work if their privacy setting lets people find them by phone number. If it is restricted to their contacts, you will not find the account.
Why can't I find someone on Telegram even with the right username?
Check the spelling first: only a-z, 0-9 and underscores, 5 to 32 characters. Then consider that they may have changed or removed the username, or that the handle was from another platform. A username that worked months ago may now belong to someone else.
Will the other person see my phone number if I message them by username?
No, not by default. Telegram's FAQ says neither side sees the other's phone number when you connect by username, unless privacy settings allow it.
Does Telegram still have People Nearby?
No. Telegram removed People Nearby in September 2024. Guides that still recommend it are out of date.
How can I tell if a Telegram account is an impersonator?
Compare the username character by character with one from an official source, look for a SCAM or FAKE label, remember that Telegram does not verify personal user accounts, and check your groups in common. The safest check is asking the person to message you first from a channel you already trust. If someone is impersonating your own staff, this guide to Telegram scams that use your team's name covers the response.
Can I look up a whole list of Telegram usernames or phone numbers at once?
Not in the Telegram app. A tool that connects real Telegram accounts, such as Entergram, can resolve an imported list by username or phone number and spread the outreach across accounts. It is still rate limited and still bound by each person's privacy settings.
Decide which problem you actually have
If you are looking for one person, get their link from a source you trust and check the username before you send anything that matters. If you are looking for a community, go to the groups or channels guide instead. And if the real task is a list of a few hundred handles and numbers that your team has to work through without colliding, stop treating it as search. Decide which accounts will do the outreach, who owns each reply, and how fast each account should send, before the first message goes out.
